DAY 8 — HAUNTED HIGHWAYS
Drive the same road in daylight and at two in the morning and tell me it’s the same place. I dare you.
At night the familiar gas station is closed, the tree line moves closer, your headlights illuminate exactly enough road to remind you how much you cannot see, and suddenly every old highway story you’ve ever heard decides to ride along.
That’s fertile ground for folklore. Phantom hitchhikers. Mystery lights. Cars that appear and disappear. Figures beside the road. Bridges with stories attached to them. The automobile gave us freedom, then immediately gave us an entirely new category of things to be scared of.
I suspect that’s why haunted-highway stories endure. A road is supposed to take you safely from here to there. The scary story asks one simple question: what if something meets you in between?
Enjoy the stories. Just keep your eyes on the actual road. Hitting a deer while looking for a ghost would be a spectacularly stupid ending to the adventure.
