DAY 13 — HAUNTED SCHOOLS

A school after hours is proof that context controls everything.
At noon it’s lockers slamming, shoes squeaking and somebody wishing lunch would hurry up. At midnight that same hallway becomes a tunnel of dark classroom doors, trophy cases and noises that suddenly require explanations.
No wonder schools collect ghost stories. Generations pass through the same rooms. Teachers retire. Buildings age. Tragedies sometimes happen. Then students do what students have always done: tell stories and improve them with every retelling.
I love the contradiction. A school is supposed to be where we learn what is true. A haunted school is where everybody whispers about the one thing nobody can prove.
Ask around and you’ll probably find your own school had one. The locked room. The dead teacher. The footsteps upstairs. Whether it was true almost misses the point. You remember it, don’t you?
