DAY 22 — AUTUMN EQUINOX

Today the calendar finally catches up with us.

We’ve been carrying on about Halloween since September 1 while summer technically still had the lease. Now autumn officially gets the keys.

The equinox is an astronomical event, but human beings have never been satisfied leaving astronomy alone. Seasonal turning points accumulate rituals, harvest traditions, myths and meanings because we notice change and then tell stories about it.

That’s something I love about fall. The transformation is visible. Light changes. Leaves change. Air changes. Even familiar places feel temporarily redesigned.

So welcome, autumn. We’ve already unpacked your decorations.
