DAY 26 — BLACK CATS

Black cats have spent centuries dealing with terrible public relations.
Cross a road and somebody calls it bad luck. Sit beside a witch and suddenly you’re an accomplice. Be born with dark fur and apparently you’ve joined the supernatural underworld without filling out an application.
Superstitions around cats vary wildly by culture, which should tell us something about how objective the “bad luck” claim is. In some traditions black cats are fortunate. Personally, I think any cat willing to tolerate us is probably doing us a favor.
Enjoy the Halloween iconography, but leave the actual animal out of the nonsense. They’re cats. Mysterious, occasionally judgmental, capable of staring at empty corners for uncomfortable lengths of time—but cats.
