DAY 27 — MAGIC SHOWS
A magician and a ghost-story teller are cousins in show business.
Both ask you to sit down, pay attention and willingly surrender certainty for a few minutes. The magician says, “Watch closely.” The storyteller says, “This really happened.” Your rational brain knows better and leans forward anyway.
That’s why magic fits Halloween so well. Mystery is the product. The trick matters, but presentation is what makes it live: lighting, timing, character, misdirection and the delicious moment when the audience knows something impossible just happened even while knowing it didn’t.
I love that agreement between performer and audience. Fool me. Entertain me. Make the ordinary world misbehave for five minutes.
That’s a pretty good job description for Halloween too.
