DAY 37 — MASKS

A mask is one of the cheapest special effects ever invented.
Put one on and your face—the thing people use to identify you, read you and decide whether you’re smiling—disappears. Suddenly you’re somebody else.
That’s why masks work so well in ritual, theater, Halloween and horror. They don’t merely add a face. They remove the original one.
As a kid, that transformation was half the thrill of Halloween. You didn’t need a Hollywood makeup department. You needed five dollars, limited peripheral vision and the willingness to breathe your own hot air for three hours.
Primitive technology. Powerful magic.
