DAY 38 — CARNIVAL OF FEAR

Carnivals are creepy because they’re trying so hard not to be.
Bright lights. Loud music. Painted smiles. Games promising enormous stuffed animals if physics briefly stops applying. Then you walk ten feet beyond the midway and everything falls into darkness.
Horror has always understood that contrast. The clown isn’t unsettling because he’s sad. He’s unsettling because he’s smiling when the situation doesn’t call for it. The funhouse distorts things that should be familiar.
I love that visual language: bulbs, canvas, calliope music, faded paint and the promise of something strange behind the curtain.
Step right up. Just maybe don’t ask where they got the prizes.
