DAY 40 — HAUNTED DOLLS

I am a toy guy. I have defended toys for decades.
But some dolls need to stop staring at me.
Haunted-doll stories work because dolls occupy that uncomfortable almost-human territory. Eyes, faces, hair, little clothes—and absolutely no reason whatsoever for the head to be pointed in a different direction when you return to the room.
Most allegedly haunted objects have stories that are difficult to verify, and suggestion is powerful. Tell somebody a doll is cursed and every settling floorboard suddenly becomes testimony.
Still, I understand why the stories stick. Toys are supposed to come alive in our imagination. Horror simply asks what happens if one takes the invitation literally.
