DAY 48 — COSTUMES

Halloween is the one holiday where identity becomes a craft project.
For a few hours you can be a monster, superhero, ghost, celebrity, cowboy or something so obscure you spend the entire evening explaining it.
As a toy guy and storyteller, I love costumes because they’re imagination crossing into the physical world. You stop merely liking the character and temporarily inhabit it.
Expensive isn’t automatically better either. Some of the greatest costumes are held together with thrift-store clothes, cardboard, paint and unreasonable determination.
So wear the thing. Adults included. Life provides plenty of opportunities to act respectable. October should get at least one night off.
