DAY 51 — WEREWOLVES

The werewolf has one advantage over most monsters: sometimes the monster doesn’t know he’s the monster.

That’s considerably more interesting than something simply chasing you.

Werewolf stories turn transformation into horror. The civilized person loses control, instinct takes over and morning arrives with consequences. The full moon and fur are terrific visual aids, but the real monster is the possibility that something inside us can overpower the person we believe ourselves to be.

Of course, sometimes I just want a hairy fellow howling at the moon. Not every monster needs therapy.

That’s the beauty of the classics. They can carry meaning and still look damn good on a movie poster.
