DAY 57 — HALLOWEEN HISTORY

Halloween didn’t arrive in a box fully assembled.
It accumulated.
Seasonal customs, religious observances, folk practices, immigration, community celebrations, commercial products, movies, television and generations of kids all added pieces until we ended up with the wonderfully mixed-up holiday we recognize today.
That’s why I get suspicious whenever somebody explains “the true origin of Halloween” in one neat sentence. Culture rarely works that politely.
Learning the history doesn’t drain the magic. It reveals how many people had to carry pieces of the tradition forward for us to inherit it.
And now it’s our turn to add something.
