When the Dead Laugh Louder Than the Living|

There’s something oddly comforting about a ghost who won’t shut up.

Lately, I’ve been revisiting Beetlejuice—not the movie, though I love it, but the animated version that aired in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The one where Beetlejuice was less of a menace and more of a chaotic best friend to Lydia Deetz, acting like a mix between a supernatural Bugs Bunny and a carnival barker from the other side.

And it hit me—this guy is living rent-free in my subconscious for a reason.

Much like Mr. Mxyzptlk, another character who popped up recently in my mental Rolodex, animated Beetlejuice is a Trickster. Not just in the “haha, pranks and giggles” sense, but in the sacred, mythological sense. He’s a force that disrupts the norm. Breaks fourth walls. Bends time and space. Doesn’t just mock reality—rewrites it. And he invites you to join in.

And that’s why I think he’s shown up now.

The Trickster’s Timing

When things get heavy, Tricksters appear.

When creativity starts feeling like a chore or a job or a to-do list—Tricksters crack the tension. They remind you that laughter is power. That weirdness is sacred. That the only difference between madness and genius is the outfit.

Animated Beetlejuice isn’t there to spook me. He’s there to reawaken me.
To say:

“Hey man, don’t just tell stories. Shake up the whole damn sandbox.”

He’s helping me remember what it’s like to play with death, with art, with identity—not out of disrespect, but out of reverence for how flexible it all is.

Building a Haunted Studio of the Mind

With everything I’m creating—Eerie Entertainment, Ashes of a Cult Classic, Embracing the Spark—I’m not just writing stories. I’m building a whole haunted studio in my head. A place where characters like Beetlejuice and Maxwell Marx might cross paths. Where Mr. Mxyzptlk might be producing late-night radio under a pseudonym.

It’s a multiverse of misfits—and it turns out, they’re all pieces of me.

So yeah… maybe the dead are laughing louder than the living.

And maybe, that’s exactly what I need right now.
