Chapter 5Branded for Life

A stop on The Totem Journey — sixteen reflections on memory, imagination, identity and the objects that carry our stories.

You knew the logo before you could spell the name.

A young boy sitting on the floor, wearing a Superman t-shirt, reading a comic book with vintage toys, a Superman lunchbox, and a Hot Wheels car nearby. The background features soft lighting from a window.

That’s not an insult. That’s a revelation.

Before we ever understood marketing, branding, or loyalty, it was already happening—through toy aisles, cartoons, cereal boxes, and playsets that unfolded into entire worlds. We weren’t just buying toys. We were being welcomed into tribes.

Star Wars. G.I. Joe. Transformers. Barbie. He-Man. TMNT. KISS. These weren’t just lines. They were mythologies. Belief systems with theme songs.

And they got in deep.

This isn’t a moral panic chapter. I’m not here to scold your fandom. I’m here to show you how powerful it was, and why it still matters. Those early bonds formed emotional anchors—so strong that a color scheme or a two-note melody can still flip a switch in you decades later.

When I held Superman, I wasn’t holding entertainment—I was holding a standard. When He-Man yelled “I have the power,” it wasn’t just a catchphrase—it was a permission slip.

That’s what branding can do when it’s done right: it offers belonging, clarity, purpose, symbols to hold onto when real life feels vague and heavy.

But here’s the twist: once you understand how brands formed you, you don’t have to stay unconscious inside them. You can take that power back. You can stop being shaped and start shaping. You can be a fan without being owned.

This chapter is a reckoning—and an invitation: to keep what served you, release what trapped you, and build something that carries your fingerprints.
