Variant madness.

Let me be clear: variants aren’t evil. Alternate sculpts, costume colors, reissues—those can be part of the magic. They expand the universe. They feed imagination.

But the moment you start feeling like you’re not “enough” unless you have them all? That’s not collecting anymore. That’s compulsion. And compulsion steals the sacred part of the hobby: agency.

It’s not an accident. The industry knows exactly how to poke the collector brain—limited runs, blind boxes, “vaulted” editions, exclusives. Scarcity panic. Fear of missing out. And suddenly the joy is replaced with control. You’re not choosing totems anymore—you’re being chased by them.

Here’s what I want you to hear: you don’t have to complete the set to be complete.

The totem works only when you choose it. Not when it owns you.

So if the hobby starts feeling heavy, pause. Breathe. Ask the real question: “What am I actually collecting right now—joy, or fear?”

You can skip the rare one if it doesn’t light you up. You can sell the extras if they stress you out. You can reclaim your space and your spark.
