Chapter 7The Thrill of the Hunt

A stop on The Totem Journey — sixteen reflections on memory, imagination, identity and the objects that carry our stories.

A close-up of a hand reaching into a box filled with various action figures, with a market setting in the background. The text 'CHAPTER 7 The Thrill of the Hunt' is prominently displayed above.

It always starts the same way: a feeling.

You’re scrolling. Walking. Wandering down an aisle you didn’t plan to visit. And then the air changes.

There it is.

The one you forgot you were looking for. The one that hits like a jolt straight to the chest. Your pulse jumps—not because you’re “nostalgic,” but because something in you recognizes a missing piece coming home.

That’s the hunt.

And for people who get it, the hunt isn’t about clout. It isn’t about filling space. It’s about resonance. Alignment. Recovery. You’re tracking down a piece of your own mythology and bringing it back into your orbit.

There’s an art to it. Half instinct, half patience. A kind of detective work mixed with pilgrimage. You learn how to scan a dusty bin the way some people read a room. You learn to ask the right questions. You learn to trust your gut.

And when you score—when you finally get it in your hands—that joy isn’t immature. It’s ancient. Because every good hunter knows: you’re not just collecting things. You’re collecting meaning.

So if you’ve ever felt embarrassed about the thrill, drop that. The thrill is your proof of life. It’s your spark saying, “I’m still here. I still respond to wonder.”

The hunt isn’t a problem to fix. It’s a ritual to honor.
