Because at some point, a lot of us cross a line: we stop creating and start curating. We trade the spark for the illusion of completion. We become shelf managers in someone else’s universe.
And look—there’s comfort in that. There’s safety in worlds where the rules are already written. But if you’re honest… does it still feel like yours? Or are you trapped in someone else’s dream?
Fandom can be beautiful. It can inspire careers, friendships, identity. But it can also become a cage when the stories you love turn into obligations. When you feel pressure to keep up. When your own ideas get buried under somebody else’s releases.
So here’s your permission slip: you don’t have to stay trapped.
You can be a fan without being consumed. You can collect without silencing your voice. You can love a universe and still build one of your own.
This chapter exists because I’ve lived it—going headfirst into reissues, chasing “complete,” stacking costs, and watching joy turn into storage bins. And one day I looked at a figure I didn’t even care about and said out loud, “Why do I have this?”
That was the crack in the spell.
I wasn’t collecting out of joy. I was collecting out of fear. Fear it would disappear. Fear I’d miss something. Fear I’d break the illusion.
Not anymore.
You are not a vault. You are not an archive. You are not an algorithm.
