Chapter 11I Choose My Totems Now

A stop on The Totem Journey — sixteen reflections on memory, imagination, identity and the objects that carry our stories.

A man in a brown suit holds a superhero figurine in a dimly lit room with cardboard boxes labeled 'DONATIONS' in the foreground. The wall features the text 'CHAPTER 11 I Choose My Totems Now.'

This is where the story changes.

Up to now, we’ve honored the past. We’ve decoded the shelf. We’ve named the shame and reclaimed permission. But now we get to the real pivot:

I choose my totems now.

Not because everyone else is into it. Not because the release calendar told me to care. Not because scarcity tried to bully me.

Because it speaks to me—right now—at the level of identity and truth.

This chapter is about conscious collecting, the moment the shelf stops being a dumping ground and becomes a reflection. You choose what stays. You choose what goes. You choose what’s signal and what’s noise.

And in that choosing, the shame dissolves.

Maybe you keep the figures that taught you bravery. Maybe you let go of the ones tied to anxiety and “must-have” pressure. Maybe you keep one broken toy because it still makes you smile—and you display five meaningful pieces instead of fifty stressful ones.

There’s no right way to collect. There’s only your way.

For me, thinning the herd wasn’t about physical space. It was about mental space. Emotional space. I had to admit that some pieces were just quick glimmers—no depth, no real connection—just clutter disguised as “collection.”

Letting go was hard at first. Then it got lighter. Then it got clean. And suddenly my space wasn’t full of stuff—it was full of inspiration.

Totems are teachers, not trophies.

And I’m done living in a museum of noise.
